I just received an e-mail from a man who adopted a 9 month old beagle from our rescue. She is chewing electrical cords and he is very concerned. Other than crating her whenever he can't be in the room with her, I am not sure what to suggest to him. Have any of you had to deal with this? Maggie was a chewer but never electrical cords.

There are covers that you can buy to go over the cords and keep them from being chewed. PVC pipe works well too and is a lot cheaper. Jersey chewed a power cord here once and never did it again. It wasn't plugged in though. Oh, and the DSL cable once too.

Toby did this once as a young dog. I didn't find out until it shocked him and he cried. He never did it again, though. Of course, after it happened, I also did my best to keep cords behind things.

Has he tried spraying the cords with bitter apple? Daisy decided that the baseboard was a good thing to chew. I used bitter apple and she has never done it again.

I second using bitter apple spray.

Zelda used to love scraping the wall and trying to eat it... as well as really nice floor rugs. The spray worked well on those things... one taste and she was done with it.. but it does need to be reapplied a few times.

I prefer the Grannick's variety that can be bought at Petsmart.

I use those cable covers you use to bind lots of cables together and conceal them. They're usually available in white or black. I got mine at Home Depot. I use one that is maybe 1/2 wide to go over our phone cord. Bodie used to chew on it but has since never looked at it again.

Oh my, that's terrible. I'm with Sephly, you have to train them to not touch things that they're not supposed to chew on. Correct, re-direct and praise/treats, they will learn fast. I can't imagine now having to worry about leaving the house and wondering if one of the preciouses will be chewing on something inappropriate. It's a non-issue in our house, but it took some work in the beginning.
