Bringing a newborn (human!) home

HI Everyone!

My wife and I are expecting our first child in February. We are, of course, extremely excited/anxious/everything else...

Now our 1yr old beagle girl Boone is a big part of our family and I want to do everything I can to make sure we bring our newborn home to a safe, stable environment, and that Boone learns to love the child as much as we will.

I've been told to bring a blanket home from the hospital first so Boone will be at least introduced to the smell. But aside from that, I'm not sure exactly what I should do aside form just roll with it.

What are your experiences (both good and bad) with bringing home a new baby to meet a beagle?

Keep in mind that Boone is an energetic little 1 year old, still very much a puppy I would say. I'm simply looking for advice to help make sure everyone is safe and happy...

A friend of mine tried to get their dog ready for baby by buying a doll about a month before the baby was due, wrapping it in a blanket and carrying it around the house, treating it like a real baby. At first their dog thought it was a toy, but they very quickly taught her that baby was NOT a toy-no biting, nipping, chewing and they even taught her to recognize the world gentle and associate it with certain behaviors around the baby. I'm not sure if this would work for every dog (theirs was a beagle/yellow lab mix), but it definitely worked for them. Lila was the best dog ever for all three of their children.
