Help!!! Winston was playing downstairs when all of a sudden he let out blood curdling screams. My daughter was with him but she doesn't know what he did.
He holds up his left hind leg and won't let us touch it. It looks swollen at one of the joints. We put him on our bed to try check him out. He shivers, and shviers. Now he's cowering under a table on the deck. He won't come to us. It's cold outside and I don't know how to help my baby. Please if you can help. I don't want to call a vet after hours. My husband got laid off yesterday, and it's a long weekend here so I don't want to call the vet until Tuesday.

You may not have a choice about calling the vet. I hope everything turns out to be okay and I hope you are able to get him inside. I worry when our dogs go outside and won't come in also because of the temperatures around here. Thankfully I have not had any experience with them hurting themselves though. Of course mine are all babies compared to some of the beagles around here on BW. My oldest is 5. I will say a little extra prayer for Winston tonight. Keep us updated. I'm sorry to hear about your husband getting laid off. I guess the economy isn't too good anywhere huh?

The swelling got too big last night. We took him to the vet at midnight. He thinks he broke a blood vessel inside the joint. It's taped up really good and he has anti-inflamatory and pain meds. The vet is pretty sure there is no break, but if the swelling isn't down by Monday he will x-ray it then.
He won't eat this am and he still just sits and shivers.

I'm sorry Winston's Mom. My husband got laid off a few months back and had to take a job at less than half what he was making and in the midst of all that our oldest had to go to the vet for something that couldn't be taken care of at home. Don't stress. It will work out alright. I hope poor Winston starts to feel better soon. Sending positive thoughts your way!

Let's all hope the swelling goes down and that there are no breaks to worry about. I hope the vet visit wasn't too expensive. I'm glad to know you took him though. I was worried about him.

My husband refuses to allow the dogs to jump (when he can control it). I've never really worried about it. I guess I better start worrying. Things like that seem to happen fairly often when dogs jump wrong off of furniture, beds, out of your arms, etc...

Keep us posted.

Thanks for everyone's support. Winston obviously is a little tense today. And my hubby will be back to work in a few weeks as long as weather starts to improve. He's the finishing carpenter, and bad weather this winter meant the framer couldn't keep caught up so my DH would have something to finish.
We just don't need late night vet bills to add to the stress right now.
Nobody slept very well last night.

He moves around on three legs. He won't let us get near him until he's too tired to stand up anymore. It's really hard for him to lay down with out help. He can't sit. He won't weight bear at all. That's the part that really worries me. All I can do is cry. We see the vet tomorrow morning. Will let you know how that goes after we see him. I don't know what I'd do without Beagle World. Thanks so much for listening and being so supportive.

It's fractured

Winston has a fractured fibula and a torn ligament. Fortunately it's in good alignment and should heal ok. Unfortunately, he's on limited exercise and has to postpone puppy school.
We still can't figure out how he did this.

Re: It's fractured

Oh I am so sorry to hear this. Did they have to cast it? I hope it heals rapidly and that he can go back to being a regular dog. I have no idea how people keep their dogs on limited exercise. I can't imagine telling mine that they can't jump on the furniture or the brick piles outside.

Eek!! I'm so sorry to hear that! But at least it's going to heal ok! Please keep us posted. It does make me feel concerned about our pups. Sometimes they'll leap onto the hard floor from the bed or back of the couch. I think I'll try to discourage them from doing that from now on.
