hes doing fantastic!
he up walking around with energy. he still favors his left leg a bit. he was falling over a great deal after his disk surgery, but hes getting stronger. im so proud of him. my back is killing me from 2 weeks sleeping on the floor in the living room in front of his kennel, but i'll manage just fine. oh, by the way, hes lost 5#'s too. he gets 2 cups of food a day. 1 in the morning, 1 in the evening. the morning he gets his wellness with 1/2 cup green beans. in the evening he gets 1/2 cup of wellness and 1/2 cup od science diet rd. i mush it together really good with my hands. he loves it. i took him off his milk bones and put him on carrot treats. took a bit of doing on the carrots, but he likes them now. threw away all his old treats. no more, ever again. they think his weight helped cause his disk problems. so hes down to 43 lbs. ok i know that sounds like a lot, but bernie is a big chested beagle. they use his size down here to chase deer when hunting. hes a very big and strong boy. i just wanted to keep you folks posted. oh, did i mention hes doing fantastic! :bounce: :bounce:

Excellent news!! Go Bernie!! Five pounds is a lot of weight to lose.....way to go.

By the way RC, my dogs also like apple slices in addition to the carrots (in fact, yesterday, Calvin swiped my apple core when I lazily set it on my desk while I answered the phone....!! He's such a sneak....ate it seeds and all) :freak:

Rick!

All good news about beloved Bernie.

But don't forget to take proper care of Rick...else he won't be much good to Bernie Beagle! Put Bernie's crate by your bed and get some sleep!

Henry envies Bernie's weight loss. Henry was at the vet yesterday and the vet used the "O" word about Henry. Obese! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif AAhhhh!!! She wants Henry Beetle to loose about 6 pounds. Oh no!

Kisses to Bernie from Henry and I.

:bounce2: :woohoo: Bernie's outstanding progress is really a testament to your excellent care and boundless love! Like others have said, now is the time for you to take care of yourself so you can be there for Bernie for the long haul. I think moving his crate next to your bed is a good suggestion -- he'll be comforted by your presence and you'll get some decent sleep!

Hi RC (I like this nickname that Deb used! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif ). You know I am following your story so very closely! It's great to hear that Bernie is doing so well  . You do need to take care of you as the others said. When I get up in the morning I want to run to Angel but I get dressed and use the bathroom so I'm ready carry her outside, and grab a sip (or 2) of coffee to wake up. It sounds silly  but my travel agent past makes me think of any airplane: in an emergency you put on your oxygen mask then your childs. We are not going to be any good for our 2 or 4 legged children if we are incapacitated!! So...continue to do the excellent job you are doing and take care! :hapfac01:

hey thanks folks.im soooo proud of him. hes doing so well and taking it all just as good.

gingergoose

try bernies new diet. it really works. ya gotta remember too that hes not been getting any exercise either. i guess all the crap ive been feeding him over the yrs was really garbage.
(im so sorry bernie boy)
ive listed it several time foreverybody whos having this problem too.

murphy's dad

yeah ive been really strict with bernie and his movement. its very important. he wants to blast off through the house like a banshee, but hes still only allowed 2ft on his leash yet. its gonna be a few months til hes ready to get physical.

i thought about putting his crate next to the bed, but its up stairs. i couldnt think of sleeping in the bed w/o him. besides, he gets to come out of his kennel and snooze an hour or two beside dad every night at this point. he looks forward to that time together. he snuggles up to me like hes my second skin. he misses the snuggling i think.

I know what you are saying Rick! I slept on the floor next to Megan several nights after she had her leg surgery. I figured it was the least I could do after she endured the surgery! :rotatesmiley2: settle on my other side and I put her blanket on her and she gives a large contented sigh and she is set. I am not sure who has who trained. :rolleye11: I also solved the lifting in and out of the car for vet trips, etc., by buying a doggie life jacket that was mesh on her belly for total belly support and had handles on the top. I also used it several times for the trip upstairs at night when my back was protesting toting my darlin' doggie diva. Just remember that necessity is the motherhood of invention. Go with flow and what works for you. I also agree with the stay healthy comments - do whatever you and Bernie need to do to make life easy.

Kathleen and RC,

You're both such loving parents. I can see myself doing the same thing, although..... :biglaugh:
