Beagle Trick

Has anyone taught the beagle a trick?

I taught Bailey to shake his hand with me when I offered him a treats.I also tell him to speak and he bark when I offer him a treat.

So far Harley knows to shake my hand before I give him his food.

I'm working on making him roll over but everytime I get him on his back he just stays there waiting for me to scratch his chest.

Gage can shake, and roll over.

Jersey can shake, roll over, touch (where she taps my hand with her nose, this was supposed to help us with heal but it didn't work) and a combo of three shere she'll stop (sit), drop (down) and roll. She used to be able to crawl, but we haven't done that one in a while. I'm sure she probably still remembers it. I have the Dog Tricks for Dummies book but I haven't had time to work with her on anything from it yet.

Hmm...why is there a limit on the time I can edit my post??? Weird...

Scooter knows that too. I taught him when he was 7 weeks old... he put his paw on my hand for a treat on his own and I used the clicker and he kept doing it.

Jersey is pretty impressive. Looks like Harley has a lot of work cut out for him...

If fetch counts as a trick than I can add that one also.

Does standing by the cupboard where his food and treats are stored count as a trick ? - he's always there when he's hungry...lol

We had so much fun training Jersey when she was a puppy. Mike loved teacheing her new things. I don't know if he was impressed with her or himself, but he was always working with her. LOL Plus, we had to teach her tricks for obedience school graduation. I haven't done any new training in a while. She's a good student as she'll do nearly anything if there's a treat to be given. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Lucky can sit, lay down, beg, leave things on command, take things on command, and fetch. I can't get him to roll over. I wish I could teach him that!

my goodness...all my Beagles can do is sit and fetch...I'm working on "BE QUIET!" when we have people come over...they will carry on for 10 minutes...

Oooh, I forgot about Leave It and Take It. I think I need to go through our obedience book and refresh myself on the things she learned in class.

Hmm, if these count as tricks Gage can do all of those except beg. He can also be quiet on demand (most of the time), go into his crate, and certain rooms on command and go get his toy if asked.

We taught Gage to roll over by having him lie down and holding onto his collar to keep him on the floor. Then moving a treat over his head in an arc. Since he couldn't stand, he had to roll onto his side, then all the way over to follow the treat.

How do you teach them to roll over??
Charlie knows his trick, but will do it with a treat.
Well lets see.....sit, lay down, shake hands(sometimes both hands), drop it, leave it, get off, night night(crate with a treat), pee pee(ring the bell). Oh he is bilingual, he knows some Chinese command. He knows "ball ball", he goes find the ball. And "find it", he'll sniff around looking for treat which I will drop every where in the kitchen. The hardest one is "come", he will look at you as if you are crazy, "I'm having fun, why should I come, do you have a treat for me?"

:hysterical: Exactly, Charlie mom, that's what Boeing does, too. As for other tricks, if you call pushing the chair out, jumping on it and onto the dining table a trick, then Boeing has mastered it /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Right now I'm trying to teach Gage to shake on command. Not shake his paw, but to shake the water out of his fur. We have lots of snow right now, and he shakes some of it off outside, but always saves his final shake for the livingroom, instead of on the porch /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif . Has anyone taught their dog to do this? How?

OK, I have to jump in with this. Shiloh knows so few tricks. And I guess technically Sit is a command, but still at least she learned something besides food words--you know, treat, cheese, medicine (which she thinks is another way of saying treat.) Anyway, this summer my son taught her this: first she Sits, then she Stays while you slowly back a short distance away from her. then you put a treat down on the floor while she holds the Stay. You wait a short time (we try to vary the time without torturing her :greendevil: ) and then you say "Good girl, go get it!" and then she can run over and get her treat! It's very cute to watch her staring intently at the treat before being released!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif I think I have a picture on the film in my camera now. If so, I'll post it when I get it developed.

Milla knows sit, take it and leave it, quiet, stop, play dead, and I'm teaching her to to take my socks off of me :biglaugh: (just in case I'm too lazy to do it myself)

Tippi and I sit outside every afternoon and invariably she will plunk down right on the sidewalk. When the kids pass by after school she would refuse to move, so one day as the kids were coming I made her get up and lay by the front door. Amazingly the next day, without prompting as the kids approached Tippi got up,walked to the front door and layed down! The kids and I made a great fuss over her and she happily rolled on her side and dropped off to sleep! I'v had dogs all my life, but never one like Tippi
