Hello all:

My girlfriend and I are the proud new owners of a 2 year old female (<span style="font-weight: bold">we have yet to name her!</span>) as of today. After searching for the perfect dog for the past 2 months, we found her at an animal shelter about 15 miles away.

Cristi's (the girlfriend, not the dog
) previous dog was actually a beagle/basset hound mix, so we have a little experience going for us there, but I come from a background of a poodle, schnauzers, a Jack Russel, a daschund, and pit bulls... So I have a lot to learn!

I'm really glad I found this forum and... As a general forum junkie, I imagine I'll be around a LOT.

As for me, I'm into cars, motorcycles, and anything that goes fast enough to get me into trouble. I've been involved in motorsports about as long as I can remember...

Enough about me, this is about the pooch! Here's some photos (sorry about the quality they were taken on a cell phone):

Anyway, thanks for having me!!

Welcome to the pack! Your new Beagle girl is beautiful!

For names, try this; what interests do you and your girlfriend have? is there an actor/fictional character you both like? Are you fans of Star Trek, Star wars, Stargate, lord of the Rings, etc? A lot of those names can be good.

Whatever you pick, make sure it fits the dogs' personality, and make sure you won't be super embarrassed hollering the name at the top of your lungs. (a good reason not to pick dog names like Stupid, Trouble, or cuss words)

Good luck with your Beagle!

Welcome another Florida BW'er! Your soon to be named baby is adorable. I really like the profile view of her in the car. Very pretty!

As for names, I had a loooonnng list of names that I was considering when I got Jersey. It will come to you. Maybe something car/racing related?

to BW from a fellow Floridian! Your pup is just adorable. You and your beagle will get along great -- if you like things that go fast, just wait until you see your pup do the zoomies -- that's what we call it when our beagles start zooming around the house. There doesn't have to be any particular goal -- my Maggie always used the same pattern, though. I adopted Maggie when she was about 1 year old; she is now 13 and ailing but, every once in a while, I catch a glimpse of a mini zoomie.
With regard to a name, I echo others in saying that, as you come to know your dog's personality, a name will come to you. I'm curious what name she came with. Looking forward to lots more pics and hearing all about your adventures -- there will be many!

Wow, 2 more Floridians already! Pretty cool. I grew up in the Palm Harbor area, just down the street from New Port Richey! My parents still live there.
I really hope you guys sneak by on that monster storm coming... The last one hit us directly and stayed on top of us for 3 days. The flooding is unbelievable.

Anyway, I grabbed some photos with an actual camera:

She's kind of moping around the house because she was spayed yesterday, so we won't really see her true attitude and personality for at least a week (I'm totally guessing on the timeframe). Then hopefully a name will come to us.

Actually, now that we're on the topic... Is there anything specifically I should be doing/watching for? The vet just said not to give her a bath for 10 days, but that was about it!

I imagine people say this all the time, but I think she's is the cutest dog ever.

Anyway, thanks for the great welcome!

Hi Frank! Welcome to BW from Henry, Yodel and I!

Bless you for rescuing that little girl from the shelter...you no doubt saved her life. Two thumbs up for you!!!

And you're right...she is adorable!

As for names...I've always wanted a little girl dog who I could give the name of Penny. Needless to say, the two dogs that we acquired since that idea came to me were boys. Oh well.

Watch your little girl's incision for swelling, pus or broken sutures. Although I'm sure she will be fine, you know that dogs like to lick things, surgical sites included.

Glad you found BW.

Howdy Frank - Welcome to Beagle World and a big ole welcome arroooo to your new beagle.
She is lovely and the pictures suggest she is thrilled with breing rescued. The second phone of her in the car she has this look like Wow am I a lucky dog or what? Take your time on the name, let some of her personality and manners come out and sway you to an appropriate name.

Frank, I am also in to cars and motorcycles. I've slowed down with age but raced motorcycles in the desert for some 20 years. Know my way around cars as well. Now, when I was a youngster like you with a girlfriend, like you have Cristi, my heroes were the likes of Glenn Roberts, Don Garlits, and JN Roberts. If you recognize any of those names, you know how old I am.

The most important thing to know about beagles is that they were breed to be independent thinkers, unlike something like a Border Collie that looks to his master for direction, Beagles don't. They don't take commands, they evaluate commands and if they want they obey. Recall is a real pain so most beagles are either contained or always on lead. Now, the good thing is that beagles were also breed to cooperate with the pack and you and Cristi are now your girl's pack. That means praise and rewards where the pack (you and Christi) demonstrates that it is pleased are great beagle motivators. This approach, reward, not chastisement, really works in training a beagle. Beagles are very intelligent and extremely loyal to their pack but very much oriented to be scent hunters. My opinion, beagles are a hoot

A big welcome to BW. Thank you for taking a rescue. She is a beautiful girl and her name will come to you. Our present beagles came with their names (Susi and Snoopy)and as they were 6 years old at the time we couldnt change them.

The main difference between Beagles and other dogs is that they cant be trusted off leash. So outside a fenced in area please keep on her the leash.
Please keep us all up to date on her progress and we are here to help.

Nice! I certainly know about Big Daddy Don, and I've heard of <span style="font-weight: bold">Elrod</span>, but I don't now who Glenn Roberts is. So I guess that makes me younger?

My racing history is in AutoX, although just recently I've gotten started in motorcycle racing (really just track days, I'm not trying to win anything... yet.) VERY cool to meet another race-inspired beagle owner!

Anyway, we picked a name. We're calling her Morgan. She responded to it immediately! Wish I would have video taped Cristi and I sitting on the floor calling her by a dozen different names so we could see which one she liked

Your beagle baby is adorable! And your sense of humor will fit in just peachy here. As for knowing, anything, I've come from poodles and cockapoos, to beagledom, and will never go back. She will teach you as you go, and we'll help along the way! We had a bagel (beagle/basset) up until May when he passed over the bridge.
They are wonderful little furpeople! Now we are expecting the arrival of our beagle boy mid September. So we'll learn together.
Each of our beagles has been a jones names like Chipper (the baseball player), Cobi (the soccer player) and Casie ( the something my sons can tell you about)....watch her play and then pick a name that she will answer to, one of the breeders of my new beagle told me that they listen to the sound, not the name actually. Don't know if I believe that, but, then Cobi would think his name is cookie.....Welcome to our world. feel free to drop in often.
