We have had our two Beagles, aged 7 and nearly 5 for nearly two months now.

Kim is the youngest and a typical Beagle I think. She loves to chase balls and sticks, she loves a quick cuddle, if there is a dirty puddle, she will walk through it rather than round it. She is very sociable with other dogs and adores chasing around with a new friend.

Noa the oldest Beagle just growls at other dogs and has started showing her teeth. She is not intersted in playing or investigating other dogs at all. She won't play with a ball or chase anything we throw for her but she watches Kim. She loves cuddles and will sit happily all evening next to us on the sofa getting tickled or stroked. I think it is a pity that she doesn't seem to enjoy life as much as Kim and wish she would be more sociable with other dogs. Anyone have any advice please?

Noa may need some help in getting her socialization/playing skills under control. Do you have any information on her background?

It seems like she hasn't had a life of fun and frolic. My Molly has a lot of issues because of her previous background, I honestly think she was just crated and possibly used to pump out puppies. But as she starts to relax with us her personality is shining. Since your dog is 7, she might take awhile to really warm up.

We met the ex owners and they seemed fond of the dogs but the dogs were always kept outside in a shed. They were taken out for walks but I think only locally and on a lead. I suppose she didn't get to play much but they both lived in this house and the younger one is so more outgoing. Strange how two can be so different. We want to ask friends to call by with their dogs when the weather is better and they can go outside to play.

Another question, Kim just loves eating the bark of the branches in the woods we go to everyday. I tried to discourage her but she ignores me of course and just picks up her branch and moves off somewhere else with it. Can it hurt her stomach at all? I would have thought so.

Both Oscar and Ruby chew the bark off branches whilst in our local park. I too was worried when Oscar started doing this, but I must admit it doesn't seem to do him any harm-although if he has been particularly busy with this activity, his poohs tend to reflect what he's been eating.

Our guys love sticks, twigs, grass, rocks (yes rocks) and have not had any difficulty as a result. I think its fun to watch them carrying the sticks around the yard and playing with them!

Well that is good that you have some backgound info to go by. I really think he will come out of his shell when he gets a few more months with you. With only a few months being in your house he is probably being confused but wants to trust you.

As for the sticks.....Molly is a stick-hound! Bark, sticks etc. No issues yet, she like to chew on them or run with wood chips.

Cobi our oldest (9) was abused by some neighborhood boys when he was a puppy. He is very serious about protecting us and his brother, Casie. He has barred his teeth at people who enter our yard without us being around...but nothing aggressive more than that. He doesn't seem to like to play either, even though we will take both he and our first beagle out for romps at the soccer fields when kids weren't around to just run and play. He is a very serious guy. Casie (2) on the other hand is very timid and very much the opposite. He'd show the burglars where the silver is if they came into the house. He loves to play, romp and have a great time....But we have had to socialize them both with others and with other dogs....

I guess they are just like people, I have one very serious son, and the other is a cut up....what can I say?
