On New Year's Eve, I was about to take Boeing out for his nightly walk when he spied some movements under the bush opposite our house. I was holding his leash in my left hand and opening the gate with my right. Without warning, he just sprinted out pulling my left hand and smashing it on one side of the half-open gate. My left index finger was sliced open near the knuckle by the leash that was still in my hand. The pain was so bad that I nearly fainted and had to grab the iron gate for support. I had to drive myself to the hospital to get my finger sewn up. The nurse said it could have been nastier if the vein and the tendon had been severed. Well...six stitches on the ugly gash /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif . (Last time it was a four-stitch cut on my nose.)
Makes me wonder sometimes how a lot of force and energy can be packed into that little body /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif
That sounds nasty. I hope you are doing Ok. My Maggie saw a raccoon in our yard this morning and twisted my fingers so much I was afraid she would break one. I always take her on the leash before daylight because of raccoons but I guess I need to be more careful how I hold the leash. The raccoon went up a tree and she did her best to climb up after him. People don't believe me when I tell them how strong she is.
Oh my gosh, Boeing's mom! I hope you're feeling better now, and that you'rd not left-handed!! What a way to start the new year. Our beagle babes are certainly very strong--it's amazing. I can't count the number of times we've been walking and Shiloh has almost pulled me down because she's stopped suddenly to sniff something! Once I asked a neighbor to hold her leash for a minute while I went inside for something. When I came back out my neighbor was holding on with both hands!! She couldn't believe how strong Shi is !
Hope you are doing okay. Beagles are stronger than they look! Ladybug goes after the squirrels and they seem to be playing with her like they know she can't get further than the leash will allow!
I'm so sorry that happened! I'm glad that it wasn't worse! It trully is amazing how much power is packed into those beagle bodies. My hubby and I were walking Wyatt last week when it was really icy and Nathan had the leash. Nathan is 6'4", a big guy. Wyatt was pulling so hard, Nathan slipped and fell!
Based on all of our experiences, a good beagle name would be Hercules! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
What a terrible experience -- I am amazed that you had the wherewithall to drive yourself to the hospital! Please take care of yourself and heal gently.
Thank you all!! The finger is healing nicely. Now, Boeing seems very interested in my bandaged finger; he keeps sniffing it and licking his lips. I just hope he won't bite it off when I'm unaware /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif .
