Am I doing the kong wrong?

After reading about many of you keeping your little monsters at bay with frozen Kong toys, I decided to give it a try. I am using the 'small beehive' version that has about a 1" round opening and is about 4" long, I smear the inside with peanut butter and set it in the freezer for a day or more to collect icicles. Upon issuing, the dog loves it, but she will have the thing licked clean from end to end in about 5 minutes! I have tried using more or less peanut butter, but the only change has been how much time she spends licking the PB off the roof of her mouth! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Is there something more to this magic pacifier? I am trying to use the minimal amount of PB since my lil' girl is only about 20 lbs and a kong full of PB is probably more calories than her whole dinner.

Well... you are off to a good start... she likes it!
What I do is fill the kong with treats/food/penut butter/cheese/whatever.... and freeze it.
When I give it to Chloe... she will lick it, get some of the inside, keep licking and so on.... It takes her sometimes hours (she stops and gets back to it - she realized that when it's defrosting she has an easier time taking the stuff out... the little monster  ).
In time, your baby will learn to even throw is to the ground and break the inside to get it out easily /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

My girls love the kong too. It takes them only 5 minutes as well. what I do before I put it in the freezer is stick a few cheerios to the peanut butter, That why when I give it to them they have to work at the cheerios too.
Wow, I always thought I was doing it wrong also; and after reading here; it looks like I was! I would get so frustrated because I couldn't figure out how to use the thing - I've only used the ball one but I could never get the cookie treats they give for it into the openings! And if I did it seemed like Molly would never get them out and she would just give up - or I would end up pulling the treat out for her! I never though about stuffing it with other treats and freezing it - or actually reading the instructions I guess either!

Looks like I'll have to pick up a new one and try it again.
I put all sorts of goodies in Jersey's Kongs. I've used the following in various combinations...peanut butter, kibble, canned food, scrambled eggs, cheese, cream cheese, dog treats, cold cuts, cheerios and even leftovers from dinner. Not too much people food, but just enough to gain her interest. If you go to the Kong website they've got lots of good recipes there.
Wow The Kong website ....How come I havent been there yet ? I think i will look a t there site tonight or tomorrow for ideas. I too keep Hooper at bay for about 15 minutes with the kong. Its a great mothers helper Hee Hee.
There's a web site??? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif I look up everything else on the internet, never thought about a kong site, lol. I have been using peanut butter, kibble and chicken jerkey. I know there are people on the lab board I read that use plain yogurt after their pups are done growing (too much calcium can be an issue for labs). I will definately check out their web site.

When I stuff the Kong I kind of do it in layers. I put something soft like peanut butter or cream cheese (low fat of course!) at the bottom to plug the little hole. Then I start layering other stuff. A little bit of kibble, some canned food, scrambled eggs, etc., whatever you're using in it. Then I fill the big hole with the soft stuff again and stick a treat into it as far as it will go. Then freeze it. It's great for the dog because they never know what's going to be in there. They get a variety of different tastes to keep them interested.

Hello! For my pupper I personally don't freeze it because she is a fussy little girl lol, but perhaps you could put some of her dog biscuits or training treats inside the Kong before sealing it up with peanut butter? Some dogs also like Vegemite and meat spreads. Another thing you could try is filling the Kong with chicken or beef broth and then freezing it. There are so many different ways to stuff Kongs, and its fun to experiment with it to see what your dog likes best!
I hope this helps. :) Stay Safe!

Have you tried a meat spread? My dog LOVES meat spread.
We use sugar/salt-free PB (just natural), or, canned pure pumpkin puree (not pumpkin filling). I've tried applesauce too, but it's not quite right.
hmm, one dog I knew loved peanut butter, but for some reason not in his Kong. I guess I should of experimented more with what he liked.
