[Wellington]

Hello my names Lisa and there is my Husband Brad 6 month old daughter Lily and Bear are 3 1/2 month old Golden retriever and our 4 month old beagle Wellington. It's been quiet busy this last little while with 2 puppies and an infant =P ...Wellington came to us from my sister after she broke up with her bf and he no longer wanted him. He's young, born Oct 10 2006. We've had him since December 27.I have never owened a beagle or really ever thougth that I would. Me and my husband have a preference for larger breads and have only had various retrievers. As I'm learning a beagle is not an easy to house train ( any help on that would be much appreciated!) But other then that he's a very sweet boy. They both have wonderful temperments and love to be patted and snuggled.

Wellington has been in quiet a few houses in his young age. The breader where he lived in a kennel (could this have anything to do with his difficulty with his house training?) My sisters house, her bf house my parents house ( where we were visiting at Christmas time) 3 days at my inlaws house and now our house where hes going to stay! Talk about a busy life!

Welcome to Beagle World! :wave: You certainly have been busy with so many young ones. My Li'l Girl is a rescue, adopted when she was at least a year old, so I can't be of much help with the housebreaking. Wellington's still very young, though, and has had an unstable life up to now. My best advice would be to watch him closely, praise him highly when he "goes" outside, and give him time to adjust to his new home. Howdy and Welcome to Beagle World. All my rescues have been adults so I'm not much help on the house training but Beagles are big dogs in a compact form. The biggest difference between the dogs you are used to and a beagle is "beagles were bred for independent thinking" so when you say come, sit, fetch, etc..., they first evaluate the command and act accordingly and a good bunny smell trumps everything. They are very pack oriented and you are the leader of their pack so they will try to please. Letting them know how happy they make you when they obey a command will make them want to please you again! The nifty thing about a beagle is he/she can go from Macho big hunter to docile cuddle bug pack member as the time of day and situation warrants. I think beagles are easy to train if you realize that they are beagles, those methods that work on herding dogs and guard dogs don't work so well but treats, praise, and love work wonders. Welcome to the world of beagles and I'm sure happy Wellington has found a forever home! Bear has a lifetime buddy and Lily will have a best friend to grow up with!

Welcome to BW (it feels weird saying that seeming we've only been here a few weeks).

I don't know about having "done" the puppy thing, we are doing it right now! We bought our two girls home tonight and we'll be doing the house training for a while I reckon after reading different posts on here!

Andrew has next week off to look after them and I told him I want them to have learnt a new trick every afternoon when I get home from work /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I'm sure we can share many puppy stories as time goes on, our girls are only 8 weeks old on Monday, so we've got a fair bit ahead of us!

A big welcome to beagle world. Is there someone at home most of the day? Then training will be easier. The moment a pup wakes up out with it, or when it starts to sniff the floor-out. When the pup obliges by doing its business outside, then big praises. Some on here crate train their pups. It is known that a dog doesnt like to mess its own bed. I am sure members who have crate trained will be along to help you. Good luck with your family, we think there is nothing better than a child growing up with pets.

I'm the one who is home the most with the pups as well as with Lily. We have him crate trained and for the most part he does very well in it. So far we've gone 2 days with no accidents so YEY! Wellington and Bear :bounce:

Ya. It will take a while so don't get frustrated or lax. The fewer accidents he has in the house the better so be ever vigilant. Praise and treats when he goes outside. He'll get it. Can't wait to see pix.

sure sounds like Wellington has had a busy life so far.....try to stay to the same routine as often as possible is helpful in housebreaking. Make a BIG deal when he goes outside and just watch him closely so that you learn the signs he gives off when he needs to go.

I'm sure that once he is settled into your home and a routine he will pick it up in no time.

Welcome to the pack! I think the house training will come along as Wellington gets accustomed to his new life! It was good of you to take him in, as you have other babies too! I have a 3 yr old male rescue beag, a 3 yr old female lab and a 4 month old female beagle. We are doing crate training too, and I do think it has kept accidents to a minimum.
Can't wait to see pics!

Hi Lisa, and welcome to BW! :wave: It's so sweet of you to take in little Wellington (love the name) and I'm sure he'll soon become a special member of your family. Yes beagles do take some getting used to, and the housebreaking might take a little longer than what you're used to with retrievers. When Shiloh was a baby, I got a book called Puppy Preschool by John Ross--it was very helpful. Also, I don't know if you're using a crate to train him, but when I finally broke down and got one for Shiloh (we had 2 poodles at the time and it didn't seem fair to keep puppy caged up while the other dogs had the run of the place)it really did help her get the hang of housebreaking sooner. Did you say Wellington was born in October? So he's still pretty young yet. I'm sure it will all come to him as he matures a bit more. Anyway, there are lots of people here to help you! If you haven't checked out the section called "Beagle Discussion" you might find more help there.

Sorry I missed saying hi! This is a good place for advice and FUN!

We got Daisy as a stray and were very happy to see that she was altogether house-trained (found out she was about five and a half years old and when we found her owner, he said we could keep her. She was so sweet we were thrilled to have her. We've had her for two years and she's never had an accident in the house, yet.

So, I really can't offer any advice, but lots of others, as you already know, can help you.
