Default Roscoe crossed Rainbow Bridge

13 years ago, God gave us a gift of the most beautiful, sweet yellow lab puppy. We fell in love minute we saw him and Roscoe has given us love in return every day for the past 13 years.

He was such a good boy that we always said he was the best dog God ever made. Everybody we knew wanted our special boy. He was good as a pup and grew into the most stunning, well-manned adult. Roscoe was loyal, lovable and mellow. He was perfectly happy being wherever we were, or in his backyard, which was his haven. He was a water dog through and through and when we moved from our old house with it's pool to this house without one 10 years ago, he missed his daily swimming routine. So much so that he broke into the neighbors' yard a few times to borrow theirs.

Roscoe loved his tennis balls and was relentless when playing fetch. Every year, Santa Paws brought shiny new balls for him and Cassie and he'd do his best to horde them all to himself. He would fit 3 in his mouth at once to keep them from her. He also loved the outdoors, whether at the lake, or on walks.

Age caught up to Roscoe way too soon and took his sight about 5 years ago. Though he was blind, he still got around and when he was in his yard, nobody would have guessed he couldn't see because he knew where he was going.

We've seen a decline in the past year, especially the past 6 months. Dementia and arthritis were making his life harder than it should have been. Though he was still his normal, happy self, we saw what was coming. A few weeks ago, he got an infection from scratching off a mole on his face. It turned into a staff infection. He was put on antibiotics and oral creams and they seemed to be working at first, but his body just couldn't help them heal him and the infection spread to several places on his body. I bought herbal ointments and sprays, hoping to stop it, but they couldn't overtake what was ravaging his poor body.

We made the decision to let him go. Hardest thing we've ever had to do, especially since Dave so wanted to be there, but knew he couldn't since his new job is keeping him at work until late evenings. My son, Brad, came with me today on the final trek of Roscoe's life. Even feeling as poorly as he did, he was still happy to be in the car. They let us be with him as they gave him the medication and we held him and loved him. After 5 or 6 minutes, they came back in and he was still with us. They said he'd need a second shot. Right then, Dave walked in the door. He was able to get away from work to be there with his boy in his final moments. He had gotten lost and didn't think he'd make it on time, but he said Roscoe knew he was coming and waited for him. All 3 of us were huddled around him as he took his last breath.

My heart is broken. This was my first dog as an adult. I wish so badly that he could have stayed longer, but I know he's in a better place. He can see again and his legs are better and he can run and chase his beloved tennis balls while he waits for us. We are having him cremated so we can bury him in the yard that he spent so many happy times in. As hard as it is, we know he was loved and that he was happy.

I'm not sure if Duke realizes he is gone yet, but he will miss his playmate and mentor. Cassie is acting depressed already, so we are showering them both with love, and Phoebe too.

Rest easy, my Sweet Roscoe. You will always be in our hearts.

I am soo sorry. I love labs, they're sweet, loyal, good easy going dogs. I'm here tearing up because I miss Marco. I know there's a huge hole in your heart right now. Hang in there, you will take comfort in the memories later on. Hugs

I am truly sorry for your loss. I hope Cassie will get over her grief soon - it must be so hard on her, growing up with Roscoe.

Hugs to you and your pack

I am so sorry for your loss. I have a Lab to thank for my love of dogs. Before that Lab I never even liked dogs. Labs are so sweet and loyal. Roscoe sounds like he was definitely everything a good Lab can be. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Also, I just wanted to say that you write beautifully. The way you told this story was truly lovely.
