Default Cross breed

Hi all. Just wanted to say hello and gather the expert opinion of the forum members.

We took ownership of 'Beau' a few days ago from a family struggling to cope with him. He's a lovely dog but far too big to be beagle (measured 18" at the withers) and I wondered what he is mixed with? He's 6 months old. We've had a few fellow dog owners speculate harrier or fox hound but not knowledgeable myself.

His personality is very hound like and he's a loving lad which is great for us. I'm intrigued as to how big he will get!

Any opinions welcome....

Welcome. My gosh he's a handsome guy. Im no expert but could be a larger hound breed. That said....hound is hound...lol. i would get him into an obedience class asap so YOU get you both working together. Read all you can about this breed. They are NOT off leash dogs so be aware of that...they'll run after a scent. It takes about 3 years for them to start slowing and listening more consistently. Train, train, train...look into using a clicker...a cheap training tool found at the petstore and great YouTube videos on how to use it. Sounds like the previous owners didn't want to put in the time and effort to "handle" the dog....you will be rewarded.

Thanks for the input guys. He's a lovely boy and I'm sure the effort will be worthwhile.

How big could he grow do you reckon?

Since he's six months i think he's pretty much full grown...he may put on a little more weight but try not too much....they like to eat...lol

That would be good if he only 'fills out' so to speak.

In terms of training and temperament, you still suspect he will be more beagle than anything else? I'm mindful of the fact he is a scent dog so walking off lead is a no go. We've bought him a good quality harness too which works well and walking him is a pleasure 😊

We aren't first time dog owners, we lost 14 year old our Labrador cross at the end of last year but she was a piece of cake by comparison. Lol

Beagles...i.e. hounds have nice temperaments...albeit mischievous...heehee. cassie is very sweet ..shes a purebred beag. Only until very recently I've noted a slowdown. She finds various places to lounge. Poor thing she only has 4 beds and a crate plus an outside chaise lounge and grass....naa not spoiled...lol
Stay with this forum, lots of experience here so feel free to chime in and ask for advice.
One other thought, get the dog microchiped if not done.

Thanks Cassie, all useful advice. He is chipped and has had his vaccinations etc so he's in good shape. He likes a lounge around himself so not too dissimilar to your girl as has 3 beds and ample outdoor space. You have to spoil them 😉

Xerxes is 16" at the shoulders so we also think he's mixed with something - maybe coonhound? - I could see foxhound for Beau with that colouring.
