Default Luna’s first week

We are closing out our first week of owning our first dog. We may still have stars in our eyes, but as of "right now" we couldn’t be happier. We have done tons of research, so, as a family, we have a lot of book knowledge but only a week of real experience. We have been training according to videos from Zak George on YouTube. I have to admit, so far it is working like a charm. I am sure that we have trying times ahead, but we are willing to put in lots of times up front for the long haul payoff. She is 9 weeks old today. We have 2 teenage boys in addition to me and my wife all taking turns training, so she gets lots of practice. Here is my first weeks observations, it may help someone else in my situation.

1. We have her attached to someone in the family via leash nearly 100 percent of the time both indoors and outdoors. Ok.. we let her run in the yard.. but she still can’t run fast. This has curbed most all bad habits so far from forming.

2. Sit, down, up. We are teaching these at the same time. Works great, again using techniques from Zak George.

3. Leave it. Worked on this 2 days. We can already drop food in front of her and she will not go for it.

4. Leash pulling is still hard for us. We can’t really take her anywhere to walk but our until she is all vaccinated up. But we are still trying in the yard.

5. Crate training. She likes her crate. Zak George again..

6. Come. Starting to get it. Needs more work. We started hand feeding her to get this to work. More details available if anyone is interested.

7. Potty training. She’ll go to the door now when she wants to go outside, not all the time, but a week in, we take what we can get.

If anyone is reading this and needs training help, check out those videos, he has a new puppy play list. As a family we aren’t known for our outstanding patience, but watching those videos helps us understand some behaviors and helps us to expect certain things.

Luna has captured our hearts thus far.

Sounds like you are doing a great job, so far. For advice, I would say, "Always take her out to potty on leash." Take her to a designated area. Use the same phrase every time - "Go potty!" "Hurry up!" (Those are mine.) And praise, praise, praise. It is nice that she sometimes goes to the door, but it's best, if an accident is not allowed to happen. She will be consistent, when she is a little older.
