Default I just...men

At risk of incurring the wrath of the menfolk on this forum...

So, Toby and I have long agreed that Xerxes is not safe off-leash except in fenced areas. He's a beagle, and a hyper one at that with *hem* magical deafness.

There is a park kitty corner to our building. Large field in the upper part, it functions as an unofficial off-leash.

Toby was walking Xerxes and Neb the other day...and saw Jimmy, their best friend in the building. And another dog. So they went over to say hi. Xerxes wanted to play with the other dog SO TOBY LET HIM OFF LEASH IN AN OPEN AREA SURROUNDED BY ROADS (admittedly quiet ones, but there is a major road a bordering the lower part of the park).

Apparently Xerxes had a ball and came when called.

I kind of lost it at Toby when he told me. Under NO circumstances is he to do that again! Geez! Our precious boy! All it would've needed is one squirrel or another interesting dog!

Men!

I hear ya. The funny thing is we have a side gate that leads to our back yard which we fenced and there is another fence within...and I put up removable fencing inside the yard and around our patio to create a very large pen so cassie couldn't escape to the front street...now all that should work....except if all the gates are open at the same time! I let cassie out of the house thinking everything was closed but the gardners weren't done and cassie made a beeline to the front. We were all frozen in place. While she was sniffying I casually walked up to her and grabed her collar...WHEW!!!

Lol... really. I once read that if your dog runs just lay down on the ground and the dog will come to find out whats up...
I wonder...

I think the only thing that would accomplish is I wouldn't see what direction Xerxes took off in!

Haha...think you're right. Years ago my daughter and husband rescued a rot and shortly after went on vacation. I offered to dog sit....welllllll.....my husband opened the front door and the dog took off running down the street with me jumping over bushes and yelling...."get the treats!" I got the dog only because she stopped...by the way my husband just watched...grrrr.

When Sophie got out without a leash, she began to take off - then circled back to keep me in sight - barely. I tripped, and she ran up for a lick-fest. My husband kept saying 'she'll be back' - I was so angry - a beagle with seizures in the middle of the woods - with bears, bobcats, and coyotes. That's safe? Really? When we bought our new house, the first thing he did was put up a safe run for Sophie - guess he didn't want to eat nothing but baked chicken for another month - lol!

Thanks Jan.

ljas, omgoodness! That's what I should do to Toby, stop cooking heh. But in all seriousness, I get why you were so horrified.

I mean, they're BEAGLES.
