This is really helpful and encouraging to read. We don't use crates either, but our Arya is only 3 months old and we have only let her used to the living room and hallway, kitchen and our bedroom (where she sleeps on her doggy pillow, right next to our bed). I am already petrified when I do have to leave her to run errands, etc. I am worried the neighbours will complain.
But my husband is planning to arrange a large play pen so that it can give her a bit more freedom, but still restrict her accesses to certain areas (like cat's litter box!) whenever we leave.
