Hi everyone, I am from Hampshire in England and am loving every minute of owning our first Beagle, Buddy.
I have joined here to get advice from people who live with this wonderful breed. I am trying hard with his training but I swear I will scream at the next person who wishes me luck in a sarcastic way because I have bought a Beagle. I have a couple of issues I would like advice on but i will find relevant threads. |

Tell me about it!
I live in Australia and people make the same comments.. but! It is entirely possible ![]() I wrote an article about it here: Men Love Dogs Too: If I Had a Dollar ? Two Little Cavaliers Just stick with it.. find the treats they love, mix it up a bit and enjoy!

I have had the same thing! So many people come up to me and after remarking on how cute she is (bc she is ADORABLE!) they say something like "but I bet she is so difficult, etc." Now, Bagel is A LOT of work, but she is not awful. We give her lots of toys and attention and love, and for the most part, she is well behaved. BUT, people are always like, she must destroy EVERYTHING (no, actually, she doesn't, she chews on her toys only) or they are like, she howls all the time, right? (no, not all the time!!!) or they say, she still goes in the house, right? (okay, okay, she still has accidents, but no biggie!).
DON'T LISTEN to people who want to put down beagles. They are the funnest, sweetest and most interesting dogs I have ever known. Bagel has changed my life for the better. I look forward to being with her everyday and that's what I tell people when they express doubt in my choice. Beagles are trainable, they really are. They take more time (bc their brains are really active), but they are worth it! |

I'll have to agree with you on that comment to a degree. Charlie wasn't my first Dog, but I was warned against getting a Beagle because "they're hard to train" was the common reason why I was told to not get a Beagle. Training him was probably the easiest thing that I've done with him thus far. Beagles DO have their quirks and you definatley have to have patience with them as with any animal I would presume. I guess some people just dont know how to convey that Beages are one of the breeds that you have to have time and patience for which a lot of people don't, which in turn they blame it on the breed.

Thank you for all the lovely comments, I did all my research before deciding on the breed. I work hard with his training and try to challenge him by hiding food for him to sniff out. Long walks in the woods so he can sniff sniff sniff and most importantly lots of love from the children. Samuel my 7 year old son is Buddys best friend.
I think alot of people give up when it gets tricky. I'm as stubborn as my gorgeous Beagle so I will never give up. |

Even my vet tech friend who is a supposed dog expert said "why would you get a Beagle? They're just hunting dogs!" Yet, she has King Charles Cavaliers and I read that they were hunting dogs at one time too!

Well I am not sure my buddy would know how to hunt. He was cleaning the cats butt this morning.
![]() It is funny how some people are expert in things they know little about. I do wonder how much research people actually put in before commiting themselves to a dog. |

Welcome. I have a Beagle named Buddy also
![]() My boy is a rescue. I adopted him at 3.5 years old, he is 8 now and full of life. Every time I step into the ring with Buddy at a Rally Obedience trial I can see people shaking their heads like is she serious? She is competing in obedience with a Beagle? ![]() I smiled and nodded when we placed first with a perfect score in Novice and smiled even bigger when he won his advanced title. I still have issues with his training though like the last trial he picked up a scent in the ring and I lost him yep, could not get his attention back so we slinked out of the ring without qualifying...LOL Oh well, he is a dog and it just made me want to work harder on his attention so off we go this weekend again. He is much more obedient and wants to work for me more than my Rottie who is supposed to be a working breed! Don't let the turkeys get you down. Beagles rule
