Default Diabetes in my young Beagle/JR Terrie mix

I came very close to losing my beloved Pennylane at Christmas. She spent Christmas at the Emergency Animal Hospital in their ICU with a Central line and other IVs Had severe Pancreatitis and Blood sugars of 378. I had taken her to my vet for vomiting and malaise and she did some labs and sent me direcly to the Emergency hospital. She was there 5 days. She now gets Humulin Insulin 4 units 2x/day; has very labile blood sugars at her Glucose Curve tests. Her Specialist vet cannot explain how she got this sick at such a young age. Stated probably "genetic". Anyone out there going thru diabetes with your baby, I would love to share experiences. Penny is he sweetest doggie I have ever had. Everyone falls in love with her. I think my vet would take her home if she could! I am so worried tha Penny will lose her eyesight etc if her sugars do not stabilize. She is on a very strict Hills WD gastro diabetes wet and dry food diet. She did weigh 32 pounds before she got so sick. Now weighs 27. Plays a lot more and is rather fiesty now with her "sister" a Lab/boxer mix who I adopted at the same time as Penny. After researching on the net, I am fairly certain Penny is a "JackOBee".

Is she named for the old Beatles song? I personally never had a dog with diabetes, but I've had a few friends with diabetic cats. In each case the cats were at least 10 years old. I guess a dog could have type1, or "juvenile diabetes" just like humans can.
