Default Skin Issue??

My 8 month old beagle pup has recently been itching quite a bit. The itching seems to be mostly focused to the sides of her face, but at times I see her itching other areas as well. I have done a very thorough check for fleas, and can never find any. Also, she is on Frontline Plus so should be flea-free anyway.

I've begun to notice 2 or 3 whitish-colored spots on her coat, near her back legs. When I examine those spots more closely, they look almost like bald spots, or areas where the fur is thinning. They are not irritated.

Could this be some kind of fungus? Is that why she is itching?

Is there any discolouration to her skin at these bald-ish spots - pinker than the surrounding skin, or darker? Or can you see if her entire skin is pinker/redder than before (sometimes indicated by a slight orangey tinge to the white parts of her coat, or a pink belly)?

No, no discoloration at these spots or in general. That is sort of what confuses me. I figured if these spots were a fungus of some sort they would be red and irritated, but that's not the case.

does it look like dry skin?

This time of year, dogs skin drys out easier with heaters on ect.

Id look at what your feeding (if this is the case, dry skin) and add some fish oil to the food.

Hmmm, that is odd. It doesn't sound yeasty or bacterial, or even allergic.
I suppose it could be dry skin, (especially if she is bathed often?) - dry skin can be really itchy.

This sounds exactly like what my murphy went through when he was about 8 months, he would chew and bite and scratch at his back legs till he had these white spots of thin fur. We tried everything, food, medicine from the vet, bitter sprays, you name it. Nothing really worked, he ended up just getting over it I guess and his fur eventually grew back. . The one thing I thought it might be was that it was right around winter time when it started so he wasn't getting a whole lot of exercise and was bored maybe that was his outlet at the time. Not much help I know, I will post pics of murphy when I get home from work, what his looked like.

This is when Murphy was at his worst and one of our attempts to cure him at the vet. Poor little guy , Like I said though, he just eventually got over it, his fur grew back and its never happened again.

Could be allergies to food or something else. Puddles went through something similar and I just switched his food and he seemed to be back to normal.

Could be enviormanet, food allergies. Could be a insect bite. Could also be ringworm.

Hey LazyMurph

I had the same issue with our Teshi. I took her to the quack and it turned out to be demodex mange.

It was explained that it is quite common in dogs less than 1 year old.

The treatment was a dip every 2 weeks for 6 weeks. It cost us about $ 300 for the treatment.

The treatments were completed at the end of December and the hair has only now grown back
