I don't like rawhides, I find they get lodged in my dog's stomach and he has always ever gotten sick off them so I don't give them to him anymore. Bought him a nylabone, has never touched it, haha. He's a very picky dog, yet he'll play with a plastic pop bottle!

Yep, Buttons is the same with rawhide. I stopped giving him them years ago - they'd just stay in his stomach and then he'd bring up everything hours later.

I have NEVER EVER had a dog of any breed, mix or sex would chew on a nyla bone! That is the one consistent thing that has spanned decades of dog ownership! Vets recommend them, and they are rather pricey and very prevalant, so obviously SOME dogs like them! And every dog I've ever had either liked or absolutely adored raw hides!

Our answer to leaving the house...
I take a small amount of what ever liittle treat I have on hand, we feed raw so no kibbles for these guys but freeze dried raw is awesome for treats.

Then Just as I am leaving, I do a gentle toss of treats into the main room, being careful they do not go under furniture an I also throw a few into Saffi's treat ball and get her nosing it about....

The noses get busy, I leave without sad faces moaning in the window and they now know when I leave, good things happen.

I agree to not leave a bone unsupervised and have had REALLY bad experience with cooked bones splintering back in the day.

Those hollowed out cooked bones can break off in a circle and get lodged around the bottom jaw of smaller mouthed dogs.Another beagle I know had this happen...almost had to break the little lower jaw to fix it. He needed surgery.

So that said...
raw bones are great, supervised, and finding a way to leave the house without guilt..worth all the research

Good luck.

When I leave the house, I throw a small bisquit type treat in their crates. When they run in to get it I close the crate door. By now they know the drill and don't get very upset.

Are you referring to the beef knuckle bone being the most cost effective?

No I get femur bones from the butcher and boil them slightly, for 2-3 minutes. For those of you that like the idea of Raw... is there anything wrong with what I am doing if it's only a quick boil.

Yesterday, he started working on a rather large femur bone and today (for the first time ever) hasn't been able to poop. He squats... but just sits there painfully with a little diarrehea, but mostly nothing. Not sure why as we give him about one of these every week with no problems prior.
