Talking Getting our pup neutered!

Hi! Our beagle is almost 6 months old and we are scheduled to get him neutered tomorrow. I called the vet on Saturday to go over any details or options available. She said it was $125 and that included everything. I called Saturday because my boyfriend was still in town and I wanted to discuss the options with him before he left.

Well, now he is gone and the vet calls back today saying we are all set but now she would like to discuss any optional add-ons. Very frustrating as my bf isn't around or available for discussion anymore, so I'm not really sure what to do.

She started by saying the $125 included everything for a swift recovery and post op checkup. Then she said she highly recommended IV fluids and a laser and several other upgrades. Total for any additions is $167...plus the initial $125. I just don't know if this is something we need or not. We certainly want the best for our little guy but also don't want to pay more than we need or get ripped off either.

I felt like she did a very poor job of explaining what the IV fluids and laser were for so I'm just trying to figure out what to do!

Thanks

Ah congrats on the pup and kudos for having him neutered.

As far as the extras... The only extras I do with a young standard neuter is a 6 panel blood work, microchip and sometimes a pain med if one isn't given at the vets. And the 6 panel technicly isn't needed on a yong healthy dog but its something I prefer.

Laser is great tool but it's not needed.

Hope that helps.

Well I paid $500, with microchip and pain meds, no nothing else, no laser.

Really??? 500?! Not sure how much pain meds are going to run me but The micro chip was 70 extra I think...? I ended up getting the IV fluids, just because it wasn't worth the risk for me! Then they called and wanted to do xrays and extract a baby tooth that hadnt come out yet and do more xrays! I said no thanks, leave the baby tooth there....they called me back AGAIN asking if I wanted to purchase the cone, which apparently is even more extra.

Basic neuture package: $125
Everything you find out later: $100

We will see what the ending damage is when I pick my little guy up later! At least the surgery went smoothly which was my main concern!

Wow. I think we paid $100, maybe, total for Lucy to be 'fixed' and tagged. Oh, and that included some pain meds for the days after. We used a non-profit in our area (called TCAP) that does low-cost spay/neutering, a free rabies vaccines. They also did the regular pup vaccinations for us.

Watch his suture line for a long while after the surgery. I had Dillon neutered around 7 weeks ago, and I noticed a couple of weeks ago that he had what looked like a growth on his incision line. He apparently was mildly allergic to the dissolving sutures and I had to take him back to the vet's and get them removed. He's fine now.

Wow, thanks for the tip. I will definitely keep an eye on it. How long are we supposed to keep this cone on him!? It is like torture for him to have it on. He literally won't move if it's on him! After I brought him home yesterday, I ended up just taking it off of him because he was so miserable. I just watched him like a hawk to make sure he left that area alone. But when it was time for me to go to sleep I had to put it on him since I wouldn't be able to watch him myself. He moved around all night and I don't think he slept for a minute. It's back off now and he's sleeping in my lap, but I can't get anything done unless I put the cone back on how long does this last!?!

Thanks for all the feedback!

Walmart sells this stuff called bitter cherry you can spray on his wound. It tastes terrible and should keep him from licking it. Then you can leave the cone off. Lucy was never very concerned about her stitches, so we didn't bother with the cone.

I paid the $ 500 in LA, and got cca 10 pain pills. They wanted to do the x-ray but I declined.

Ouch Kutyuska.
Stewie cost me 100$ last year. Boomer came neutered.
Back in 1997 Brandy (big dog) cost me 234$

I never used a cone. I know a couple cats when healed the line was a little bumpy but after time was all good.
