So we had our first emergency vet experience today. Well I didn't, but my girlfriend had a big surprise waiting for her when she got home from work. She came home and was letting Murphy out of his crate to go outside and thought he had something big in his mouth. When she went to go check she realized how swollen his face was. His right eye was almost swollen closed and he had big floppy jaws like a bulldog or boxer. She immediately called the vet and they told her to bring him in asap. When she got there, they got him right in and concluded it was a spider bite, she said most likely a brown recluse. They gave him a couple of shots and about 3 hours later he is back to his cute self again. Hopefully he learned his lesson, I know he gave us one heck of a scare. So I don't know if anyone has gone through this before but if you do in the future, swollen face could equal spider bite.

My dog went trough the same thing a couple of months ago, we never knew why but he looked like scooby-doo mouth was atached to his head, it was very fast, I lost sight of him for like 15min. A couple of days later I found a small hairless circle in the back of his front leg, it got really ugly and the vet told us that maybe the swollen on his face had been because something had stung him there.
His swollen face got back to normal about 4 hours later and the bite on his leg dissapeared 2 week later. |

I know, it was a funny coincidence too, because I was thinking earlier yesterday how great it would be if I could train Murphy to hunt and kill spiders. That is usually my job since my girlfriend is deathly afraid of em.

Cobi got into our dank basement as a puppy, and when we brought him up, he looked like a Sharpei.
For a beagle puppy, that was pretty puffed up. Sure enough, he had gotten bit by a house spider, nothing exotic, just a house spider. But he was allergic to it and ballooned up horribly. The vet gave him a shot of bendryl or a derivative and told us to give him an additional dose in the AM....these things always happen when the vet it closed...he's fine now from that...but who would have thought?
