We got Peggy yesterday and she is doing ever so well. She has learnt sit and fetch already, and she slept beautifully in her crate overnight after just a little bit of causing a fuss.
I set my alarm every two hours overnight to take her out to try and go to the toilet. She didn't go, but she didn't do it anywhere else either. She eventually went outside at about 6am, so she's doing great. However, during the day she refuses to go outside in our back yard. We can sit out there for two hours with her and nothing, then as soon as she comes in she squats and does her business on the carpet. When we see her doing that inside, we pick her up with a firm 'no' and put her outside. However, she doesn't then finish what she started. However, when we then bring her back inside, she will squat again. I bought some of the puppy training pads and also the spray that is supposed to attract them to do their business, but she hasn't paid the slightest bit of attention to these. I know it's very early days and am ever so proud of how she is doing, but I just wondered if you had any advice on this at all. How can we get her to go outside and not just inside? Thank you for any comments or ideas

I know the first time Lily peed in the house we cleaned it with some paper towel and then brought that outside and wiped it on the grass. Same thing when she pooped we picked it up and put it outside where we wanted her to go. We still had a few accidents here and there but she seemed to get the idea after awhile.

+1 to paper towel wipe.
Also, is she peeing in the same spot? I'm not sure how well you cleaned it, especially if its carpet it may have gone thru to the padding. Her beagle nose will prob find that scent and return to the carpet. We use a Natures Miracle spray for urine, and we had ok results until she was trained. Now that she's trained to potty in the same spot...the spray is truly a miracle. |

It's not the same place, so I don't think it's that she is sniffing it out to find it.
We will try the paper towel wipe and also if she has a poo inside we will put it outside to encourage her. It's still early days so not really worried, just want to do our best for her. Have just signed her up to Puppy Class, she starts next week I think after her first vaccination injection

We ask "do you want to go potty?" in an excited voice. Use the exact same intonation and words each time. When outside we designated a small aea for her 'potty'. we brought Sophie there and just stood still. Eventually she got bored enough to go. Then after a "good girl!" and pets we brought her inside. Hint: often you can tell by the bulge on their backside when they have to poop. You have to be even more 'stubborn than a beagle'. The first time is the hardest. Sophie now does her business quickly, so she can go walk and smell all the new scents.

Treats are a great idea for that! Make sure its a high value treat, something she doesn't get often.

Thanks for the advice. She has made some good progress today by using the wipe idea suggested above. Still sometimes doing it inside but also now doing it outside, so that's a step forward!
Last night through the night she was brill, brought her downstairs and outside twice and both times she did a wee within 5 minutes, then settled down straight away again in her crate and went to sleep. She now does fetch, sit and come really well. She responds instantly to whistles, is that something bred into them or just something I've stumbled across with her do you think? |

My dog Bailey likes whistles too. She comes well to them. I hadn't tried whistles with any of my other beagles so I don't know if it's a common trait.
Bailey potty trained pretty well. We took her outside and urged her to go and when she did we praised her. However, sometimes we wouldn't notice that she wanted to go outside and she would potty in front of the door. So we put some small bells on a string and hung them from the door knob. We trained her to ring the bells when she wanted to go out. She caught on pretty quick. Now there are no more "accidents". |
