I came across these pictures on the Web site and Facebook site of the shelter we got Seamus from. For some reason I LOVE knowing who his family is, so the pictures make me very nostalgic.

Just wanted to share!

Seamus and 3 of his siblings (there were 7 all together!) He's the one in the very back.

This picture, I guess, is a couple months old. The tanish one is Coco, one of Seamus' sisters, any the other is his Mama, Heidi! Yay! I got so excited when I got to see her! :D (He has her face!)

The breed of his father is still a mystery, but it's assumed he was a hound mix as well.

I've seen here and numerous other posts online to try Adolph's meat tenderizer for poop eaters.

Has anyone had success with it? I just gave them their first "treatment". Seems like its alot (1/2 tsp) but that is what I found in several resources. It slowed down my big Beagle tremendously - he usually inhales his food and this is the first time I've ever seen him eat so slow. The poop eater just gobbled her's up as usual.

Will the added salt to their diet make them sick? They currently eat Solid Gold Hund-n-Flocken Adult Dog.

Here I am worrying about them already and its only 5 minutes.

Just curious what to expect and look for. The poop eater is nasty and I have to get her to stop (if at all possible). She's a burper and if I have to have poop belched in my face one more time, I don't know what I'll do. Nasty nasty nasty!

Training issues.

Ok so I have now gone to 3 puppy classes and I am not exactly happy with this situation. I had two options a lady who would come to my house for $35...

Ok so I have now gone to 3 puppy classes and I am not exactly happy with this situation. I had two options a lady who would come to my house for $35 per 45 minute session to work directly with me, but she didn't have puppy classes yet as she is just starting out. The second option which I chose is $30 for 7 puppy classes which I have to drive 45 miles one way to get to.

Originally when I called the trainer I asked for some private sessions to work on some behavioral issues. She told me that because of her age Lily should be put in puppy classes for socialization as that is the most important thing at her age.

Ok so there are 2 labs and a mastiff in class. Each night Lily hides for the 15 minutes of free play time and does not interact at all. They are much bigger then her and she seems scared of them as they play really rough. The trainer has done nothing to correct this situation. So I lead myself to wonder if socialization is so important why does the trainer ignore the fact that Lily hides during playtime? Is she really gaining anything from hiding the whole time?

My second issue is that she says all dogs should either be put on a choker or a prong collar. When I voiced my concern, especially with Lily being so small she said I should be able to find one or the other that would work with her. So instead of giving me options to handle her better while walking her I am told either of those collars will solve the problem.

I discussed with her last night that I think Lily is starting to show dominance issues and she thought it was possible based on what I discussed. They were remodeling the training room due to water damage so she didn't have the papers she wanted to give me on the issue. We don't have class next week while they work on remodeling so she advised me that she would give me the papers when we have class again on the 21st. Now does this sound like a responsible way to handle someone who is concerned with dominance issues by telling them you will give them documents on correcting it in 2 weeks?

Last night we were working on heeling. So the 4 owners and their dogs were walking around in a circle. If one of the dogs was causing a backup she would tell the owner they needed to get their dog under control and get moving. Now as a trainer shouldn't it be her responsibility to walk over there and show the owner the proper way to handle the dog when a problem arises instead of just telling someone to get their dog under control? Lily was good during this, but we never walked more then a few steps before having to stop because the dogs in front of us weren't moving so I felt like I didn't get a good chance to practice it and the trainer was never even looking at her because she was too busy focusing on the dogs who were holding things up.

I don't know if I am over reacting here but I am starting to feel that these training sessions are a waste of my time and money even though it's only $35 for the whole course it still also costs me gas money to get there and back.

So far I have not really learned anything I didn't already know. The first night the only thing we worked on was sit which Lily already knows, sit, down, shake, and roll over. The second night was mostly consumed with people ordering dog tags, and then we worked on stay and come by having them sit on our left side with leashes on showing them the treat throwing it out letting slack on the leash so they could go get it and then reeling them back in while saying come and having them sit again.

I guess I am just looking for some opinions on this situation. My gut instinct is to just pull her from the remaining classes but my husband thinks I should keep going and if I feel we still need more training when we have gone through the complete course to then call the other lady and try working with her.

First Day at the Dog Park

I just wanted to share our first experience at a dog park! Chloe is finally at the age (6 mos) and up to date with all her shots, so we figured "what the heck." She's always been great with other dogs. I almost worry about her that she's tooooo submissive though (can that be a bad thing?). The most aggresive she gets is to roll over and pee on herself. :utoh:

Anyways, we show up at the dog park and there are about 3 pit bulls there. They looked friendly enough, and Chloe was hesitant at first, but we took off her leash and she went running. They played and romped around together. It was cute. It was funny though, because I never considered Beagles as "fru-fru" dogs....but she looked pretty fru-fru to me next to some of those bigger dogs! Towards the end, she made friends with a puggle (who was just adorable!)....she let me know it was time to go when she started to play a little too rough for my liking.

The only downside is that the dog park is mostly made up of dirt....so she was a MESS and we bathed her immediately when we got home. I know that you are only supposed to give beags baths once a month (unless they get into something in the meantime!).....does this mean we shouldn't go to the dog park as often? Should we still bathe her every weekend if we do?

Sorry, boring post without any pics!

Ok I was so bummed out that the battery was dead in my camera but I have to tell you about this. I LOVE the 3 stooges and I can't help but watch them. Well there was nothing good on t.v. this morning so I popped in stooges dvd. Lily was sitting in my lap as the show started but quickly jumped down onto the floor. She sat in the middle of the room staring at the t.v. and she would tilt her head to one side and then the other. She then would turn around and look at me if it quieted for a second or two then went back to staring at the t.v. and tilting her side to side. I watched two episodes of it and she sat there the whole time staring at the t.v. and tiling her head from side to side. I am thinking perhaps I have another stooges fan in the house? I am not sure which made me laugh harder lol.

A while back we were fostering a dog, it attacked our ferrets things didn't end too well. Corey considered those guys to be pretty much litter mates as he spent alot of time in their pen when he was a pup and about their size. And still plays with them to this day.

Anyway since then Corey does not do well around other dogs. He use to play just fine. A little dominate but that was it nothing that caused major problems. Now he has become very protective, but only when the other dog is bigger. He will guard everyone, including the other dog's people and smaller dogs.
I don't have full time access to another dog, which obviously has to be certain type of dog. I was making some progress tonight with another dog who was just about perfect but their owner flipped out over something that didn't happened and I don't think that I'll have access to that dog any more. I was wondering to make the most to when I do have another dog around how do I get him back to playing? I want him to be a friendly dog. Plus it makes it hard to take him any where he ends up stuck in his crate when we visit friends because most of them have dogs and we can't take him.

At home we use a wire crate. I also have a hand me down plastic kennel which I stuck in my car when we go to the dog park. She just got so dirty, I gave up on cleaning her there. She normally sits on a towel and falls asleep in the seat, she's not too into the seat beat attachment we have. no wait, she likes to chew on it. But the plastic kennel is sort of big 28"L x21"W x22"H to take in/out of car. I had to take it with me to work the other day, and lugging that thing up/down 3 flights of stairs plus Hailey...was a chore.

So now i'm shopping for a 3rd, which I could leave in my car. I guess my question is how small can I go? Hailey's a 15 for sure. Don't want to end up getting one that she's going to outgrow. But the one we have is hard to move in/out the car.

after trying to find good heathly treats & failing miserably, today i made 2 types dog biscuits once meat based the other carrot & pea based, they turned out so well & they love them, does any one else make their own & have any great recipies

what do you give your dogs? i read a post somewhere on here the other day scorning rawhide but praising cow hooves, didn't quite understand that one, mine do love anything, carrots/plums/tomatoes/apples/berries (we have an allotment so these are always around & are generally scrounged)

chews/biscuits/bones ect... but i'd like to just find something good, Dudley can swallow huge chunks of chew in one so this concerns me greatly, they really don't care for large rawhide or the 'good' natural chews, i'm somewhat weary over fresh bones as my mothers dog had them & she swore it made him grumpier & anything else biscuit/chew wise is gone in seconds, i saw a recipe for striping liver & slow baking it so i might try those

Ok so I don't know if I am alone in this , but I feel so bad having to crate Lily during the day especially considering I work from home. I mean it's not a tiny crate she has plenty of room to move around and access to water and toys and she is never in it for more then 3 hours at at time (except at night of course) but I still feel guilty. Does that get better with time? I have never had to crate a pet before (this being my first puppy).

This was only our second week of crating during the day. She seems to be doing better with it she didn't constantly howl and cry this week like she did last week. Now she will generally only cry about 1/2 hr to and hour before it's time to let her out.

Just for a quick recap my trainer said she is suffering from separation anxiety and needs to be crated during the day to get used to being alone. I would like some input on others as to how long this needs to be done? Should I always crate her during the day, or when she is older would it be ok to go back to keeping her with me during the day, or would that undo everything that was done?

The trainer was saying that everyone in class should let their dogs off the lead at some point during the 4 week course to get them used to this. I specifically asked her if this was the case with scent hounds like Beagles. She said yes, a Beagle can absolutely be trained to be safely off the lead. She said there was a lady who attended the adult dog class whose Beagle was 100% reliable off lead, and she herself has two 'sight hounds' that are great off lead.

What do you think of this advice?
