Your shouldn't be able to see too much rib or spine. Being energetic and busy is good but be sure that he is getting the proper amount of food. This site might give you an idea if he is too skinny or just right:

I'm of the understanding you shouldn't be able to see your dogs ribs but slightly feel them when you touch them. Think this is a good guideline to keep an eye on your dogs weight. Try adding some minced chicken to your dogs feed, that will give your dogs body more substance and bulk him up a bit
