He's almost 2 years old and started coughing like the kennel cough he had when I first got him from a shelter 8 months ago. I immediately took him to the vet and they looked him over and gave me an antibiotic. The cough is almost gone. He was hacking about every 10 minutes at first. He won't drink any water for 3 days now though. He eats fine and seems ok otherwise but he usually drinks a bowl a day. I have been mixing his can food with water into a soupy mix just so he'll get some water but we are on day 3 now and he won't touch his water. Anybody see this before?

I am thinking that maybe he feels sick to his stomach from the meds. That's good you are putting water in his food. I would call the vet just to be sure its not something else.

How to tell if your dog is Dehydrated - Dog Health & Nutrition - Dog Forums - I-Love-Dogs.com
I agree with Cassie. Adding water to his food is a good start, but he may not be enough. Pinch his skin between his shoulder blades. If he is not dehydrated, the skin should return to normal in less than 5 seconds. You can check out the link. Your dog might need subcutaneous fluids, which are just administered under the skin. The vet may even send some home with you. I had to do this for my pet rabbit. Definitely give your vet a call. |
