Default Thin Beagle after illness

Hey guys,

Rocky about a month ago started with severe vomiting and watery diarrhoea at 1am. I took him to the on call vets where they admitted him to the animal hospital. ( I was panicking, as we had a bavarian mountain hound pup, called Ruby that died last year from parvo, aged 17 weeks despite being immunised)

He was there for two nights whilst they rehydrated him and did a battery of blood tests and investigations that all came back clear. He weighed 10kg the day before he was ill as I had taken him to the vets for his wormer.

Anyhow when he was discharged he weighed only 8kg so thats a massive loss of 2kg in as many days. Anyway he was on bland food (potatoes and tuna) for a few days after discharge from hospital and now is back on his normal food. I was told by the vet to give a little more than usual to help with his weight gain, however when I took him for neutering last Friday, he weighed only 8.5kg after a month!!

Not really sure if there are any supplements that I can get or whether you guys have had any similar experiences and what you did?

Any advice really appreciated

I would continue to let him gain slowly. gaining too fast can cause issues as well. glad he is better and all ok. Sorry about your last pup. New science studies are showing that shots given too early are being "attacked" by the naturall immunidty from the mother. So starting shots at 9-10 weeks works better.

If he continues to have trouble gaining weight you can look into satin balls.

Poor guy glad hes on the mend.

I agree with brandy. you want him to gain slowly. since he is so young. you dont want extra weight on his growing bones. at his age, he will look lanky and what not. as dogs dont finish filling out until 1.5-2 years. So dont be in a rush to put it on him.

Id rather see a pup who needs to gain a pound or 2 then loose 2 or 3 lb.

I learned the hard way with my Feist who is a year old. Apparently I wasn't feeding her enough and she got too skinny. I started feeding her large quantities of food to fatten her up and it gave her gastritis.
After $164 at the vets, a bland diet, and medication, I will now SLOWLY feed her more!

Poor girl. Sorry you learned the hard way. Its always best to fatten slowly. As you found out.

when I got Solo at about 5 weeks old, you could see every bone in his teeny body (i have a horrid picture of him. Looks just like a dog you would see on a HS commercial).Holding him felt like holding a bag of sticks, it was gross. All I wanted to do was feed him. But I did about 6-8 SMALL meals a day to slowly fatten him up. Now he is good and healthy.

Hi there, I have tried to contact you on another site about ruby.

I believe I could have ruby brother. I purchased buster from liegh cats and dogs.
After hearing about ruby I felt very sad, When we got buster home he was very dazed not alerted and did not want to play like a puppy, I just thought it could be new sorroundings and stuff after a couple a days he was no better Not playing moving very little and not eating- we took him to the vets there and the guy said he had a tummy bug and to feed him on chicken and rice and some paste after a few days he started to perk up, we had asked if any of the other litter were poorly and they said N0 buster has been back a few times and I've never been happy goin there.

I just thought I'd let you no and very sorry for your loss of ruby.

Hi, Yes I got Ruby from Leigh Cats and Dogs home, a couple of the other pups from that litter died too . They contracted the parvo from that Kennel. Your buster was lucky to not be affected as a few other pups were very ill but managed to pull through. The vet operated on Ruby as it was thought she may have a blockage but when she did her bowels were necrotic, and the vet called me at work and advised me to have her put to sleep whilst under anaesthetic so she wouldn't suffer. It broke my heart and all Leigh Cats and Dogs home said was "claim off your insurance". It was just awful, it wasn't about the money. I wanted my Ruby to be fit and healthy, I would have re-mortgaged my house if it saved her life. They are just b*****ds. I will upload a pic, she was beautiful xxx

I feel even more upset knowing that they knew about busters brothers and sisters being unwell and passing away, I will not be going there again, i picked buster last of the litter. I wanted to get the last bitch as she was gorgeous ( if I had the funds I would o took both) but the bitch had a deposit, liegh cats and dogs home said we would get a discount but every time I've been I've spent a good amount of money on vet bills, I've just signed him up to a fantastic vets .
Buster does have signs of anxiety depression which we are working on he is very unsettled on his own, but the kids cannot leave him alone and he loves
it, I have only ever been able to trace what I believe to be buster other sister in skemsdale I believe she jumped out of a window and went on a 2 mile hike they found her after a day.

I'm glad but upset in a way that I have contacted you to find about the litter and sorry if I caused any upset. I'm located in Warrington if you would like to see buster.

Thank you for gettin back to me and I'm very sorry once again.
