I thought the forum was to offer advice, not to be judgemental and critical.

When have I said I want rid of her. To do that would break my heart, but I posted in a stressful time and hoped for a bit of support, not criticism.

Clearly not all posters have as good intentions as I assumed.

I'm sorry that you are having to deal with all of this.

These are the facts, yes?
You have a new puppy. She is behaving in a way that you do not understand. Your wife was injured badly enough to frighten her. All you want is some help. The behavior does not seem normal to you, and you are - rightly - confused and not sure what to do next.

After reading all of the posts, it occured to me that no one asked you if you had her checked out by a vet. I have rescue animals, and in this sort of situation - especially since she is so good in scenerios where you would expect aggression if she were so inclined - that would be my first step. Are there vision problems? Other issues? I would also have the vet evaluate her, and ask for their advice. None of us are there, so we cannot see what is going on.

After doing some research on the net - I found that catnip does affect some dogs - and that some glues on wallpaper are toxic and can affect dogs. A question to ask is whether Peggy is particularly sensitive.

Please let us know what you find out.

ljas, thanks for your post. I don't think she has any vision problems as she can spot treats and toys a mile away. She also runs full speed around the place dodging the tables and chairs and never bumping into them. She had a full check at the vets when we got her and everything was fine. Will mention it when we take her early next week for her second vaccination just in case.

Interesting about the wallpaper glue, maybe that and the catnip just made those objects too important to her.

I think we do now understand her behaviour for what it is, resource guarding which is a normal dog behaviour, and it's our job to show her that it's not something she needs to do. We have been feeding her by hand today to show her that she doesn't have to worry about our hands being near her at important times.

I printed off a lot of info for my wife to read and she now realises the behaviour isn't a personal thing and wants to work on things. I am going to also follow up on the one to one training sessions as well as the group classes.

Thanks to those members who have been supportive!

I guess the biggest lesson is take everything with a grain of salt. The important thing is knowing you are not alone. We have problems with Lily biting as well although I can't pinpoint the cause of her behavior. As I stated in other posts I was taking her to puppy classes but those are utterly useless. I am waiting to hear back from another trainer who has references from behavioralists she has worked with. I will be able to get one on one training and hopefully get to the bottom of the issue.

I am a first time puppy owner and I just want to make sure that I handle everything the best way that I can so that she grows up to be a healthy and happy dog. I am sure that is all you want for yours as well. Please keep us posted on how things are going, having others to talk to is what makes having a forum so nice.

REMINDER:

The purpose of this forum is to be a friendly online community where people share ideas, opinions, stories, pics, etc. of their beagles. That is why I first joined. We can ask questions, share OPINIONS, and such but please lets try to remain cordial. Remember that reading someone's posts is not the same as hearing them speak and it is very easy for things to get misinterpreted.

Lets keep this a friendly forum, remember that everyone has their own opinions and leave it at that.

I also want to comment that violence of any type towards your pets is not an effective means of "training".
