Default Did she hurt her neck?

Should I be concerned?

Mixer and I went on for our walk last night. I admit it has been a few days since we have been on our nightly walk but it has been raining. Last night's walk was a DISASTER! I'm very diligent about stopping when she starts pulling on her leash and typically she will just sit down. Which she did last night but the minute I started walking about she would take off into a run and then of course would be yanked back by the leash (note, i did not yank her back, just the sheer force of the leash).

Finally after about 20 minutes she started walking nicer, went potty, but when we got about two houses down from us she must of caught the scent of the neighbors dogs or something and no matter how long I stood there she would not relax. I hate to admit it, but I'm surprised she didn't' pass out from the lack of oxygen she was pulling so hard on her leash and gasping. So I started making my way to our house and it just got worse. We got inside the house and our routine is she goes outside immediatly. We have a pool set up for her out there and with the rain we had earlier i knew it was full so she filled up on water.

My concern..... after she settled down on the couch she started whining. She didn't get up or anything, go to the door or even look at me, but i could hear her whining. Did she hurt her neck last night? Should I be concerned? When my hubby walked through a little bit later she laid her had on his stomach and was still whining. And this morning when she woke up I could hear her under her breath. But she ate all of her breakfast and drank water fine and even let out a few barks at her new toy. But I'm still concerned that she might of hurt herself last night? And because I know she has alot of pent up energy, should I try taking her for a walk tonight... obviously going in a different direction.

Awww poor baby. Hopefully she just pulled some muscles. If it goes on for a day or so more, than I would call the vet. I find that harnesses work best for te beagle pull. Even my greyhound wears a harness.

My first beag had major neck problems later in his life and he had to wear a harness. So I figured I would start Molly off on one right away.

If you don't already have it get a harness. We use them on both dogs even though they wear collars w/their tags most of the time. For walks we put on their harnesses and I wouldn't do it any other way. Much easier on their necks.

I don't know if this will work in your situation but sometimes when Lily is on a walk and gets super anxious about something I go to her pick her up and talk to her while rubbing her head and if she calms down I give her a treat and put her back down. I don't know if that is a bad habit to get into but it usually seems to calm her down and we go about our walk.

If it were me I would probably give the vet a call and see what they think. And I would also agree that getting a harness would be the best thing. I can't be good for her to be choking herself like that. Please keep us posted!

Couldn't agree more! Our boys and girls have such sensitive necks. Collars are just not a goog idea and the dogs behave so much better when they feel secure in a harness.

We always use the harnesses on walks too! If it is just a quick potty trip we use the collar but harnesses will make your life, and hers, much easier

Thank you everyone for your concern. I never got around to asking the vet, I had to call with another question Thursday afternoon after Mixer ate a mushroom and it completely slipped my mind. I did end up taking her for a walk that night and it was MUCH better. I do think that her neck was probably tender because the minute she would start to walk away and the leash/collar got tighter she would stop or walk slower so it wasn't being pulled. This morning in puppy training class was a different story... she couldn't even bark at the other dogs passing by because she was pulling on her leash so bad. I had already made the decision to buy a harness so I picked one up as we were leaving today (we do the Petsmart classes). She tends to wear herself out on Saturdays with the training class so we didn't go for our walk tonight but I'm anxious to see how it works tomorrow.
