So after finally reading dog food labels I was appalled by what was in my puppy's food. I bought new food so i could start mixing it in with the old stuff right of way so i could make the switch. And I told hubby what to do also. And he was mixing it... probably 70/30 mix. Well... he was mixing it but wasn't' paying attention and mixed the new good stuff with a bag of bad food we had opened but only used once or twice in the beginning. So poor Mixer got 3 meals of a mix of two different NEW foods.
Can you say upset stomach? We have been watching her like crazy so she doesn't have any more accidents in the house (i'm scared to go home on my lunch hour) and trying to keep her hydrated (if she would stop flipping over her water bowl)... but this morning I had no idea what to feed her or how much. I would still like to make the switch. So I mixed about half of a cup of food (she usually gets a cup in the morning) with her old food and the new good food. I know she needed food but I didn't want to give her alot because I know it would go straight through her. Was this wrong? Should I give her the full serving of her old food (1 1/2 cup) for dinner or should I still be mixing it with the new stuff? Thank you in advance for your helpful suggestions. |

If her tummy is upset, I would go with rice and cream of chicken soup till she feels better. That is really easy on the stomach. It works for humans too. I have to mix the food for Tucker for at least a week otoo as he gets an upset tummy easily.

i prefer to mix something in their food every time they eat. just a couple tablespoons of whatever we are having for dinner. i think it helps them adjust to changes in diet more easily.we recently switched cold turkey from wellness to taste of the wild (because it was on sale way cheaper) and all three dogs ate it without the slightest sign of an upset tummy.

Some dogs have are more sensitive to different foods than others. Zoey has to be fed very carefully, and will throw up almost anything - it took quite a while to find a food that she would tolerate. Sophie can (and will) eat anything with no visible problem: her puppy food, Zoey's food, my son's french toast (he got careless), the cat's food. Today, she ate some of the chicken's layer pellets, and sampled their scratch. Amazing!

I think Lily has an iron stomach because when she was 2 1/2 months old my husbands family was home for 8 days and even though we tried to separate her food from his brothers dog's food she still ended up eating some of both every day and never got sick thankfully.

We went through 3 or 4 different dog foods with Roscoe b/c of his sensitive stomach. We went through months of diharea so I feel your pain. I agree with "Tucker" that rice and even just boiled chicken will be good just so that she can get back to normal. Then proceed with mixing maybe smaller amounts at a time.
It is trial and error (unfortunately) until you find the right food that doesn't upset her stomach. Roscoe has been fine for over year now (thank goodness).

we've been through 4 types of food trying to get Arthur right & 6 weeks of diarrhea & many calls to the vet, suprisingly Science Plan worked wonders for him & was pretty much instant, the natural, hypoallergic, additive free food didn't agree with him either, i always used rice in the mix, percentages old & new 80/20 60/40 ect.. & did the slow transition over a few days.... Dudley can eat anything and nothing upsets his tum

Thank you everyone for your replies. Luckily her stomach problems didn't last too long and was back to her "normal". <-- Thats another issue How long...
But here is my dumb dumb question. I've been reading tons and tons of articles about trying to harden up her stools. I have read anything from pumpkin (does it really work for diaharrea AND constipation, that just seems weird) and a rice mixture. But here is the dumb dumb question... is the rice cooked? Can i just mix it in with her regular kibble? |

i think i responded in another post just earlier, but we used cooked rice. We eat both brown/white/brown-white mix....I just make a lil more when we do brown and leave it in the fridge. plop a teaspoon or 2 + 1/3 of a carrot with her usual kibble

Yes canned pumpkin works great mixed in with their kibble. Make sure it is canned pumpkin and NOT pumpkin pie filling!
We used only cooked white rice with Roscoe. By the way, there are no dumb questions
