New Beagle Owner

I just rescued a beagle from the shelter this afternoon. She is a female about 4-5 years old they said. We have to take her to the vet to see if she has been fixed, and get her shots. We don't know her name, but since we got her on St Patty's day, we named her Patty. She is so friendly and just wants to be loved. When we left the pound, she just jumped up into the truck. We got home and took her for a ride through our woods in a utility vehicle. She loved it. We have her tied in the garage till she knows this is her home. I heard that beagles run away. Can anyone tell me about beagles. She seems so content, she doesn't even bark being out there by herself. She just wags her tail when I go out and sit down and love her.

Even after over 20 years with Beagles, I never let one run loose without a fenced in yard. When they get a scent, they get deaf! They also always want to be where their people are. Good luck!

Patty sounds right at home with you already! I agree, never leave her off leash. Beagles are fun loving, smart, and food driven little dogs. They are wonderful pets/companions who need physical and mental stimulation. A bored beagle is not a good thing! LOL

Will she be allowed in the house? Is she house broken?

Beagles are fun to have and also they love to be around people so i wouldnt have her as an outside dog with the beagles nature they love to be around people and love to dig howl and hunt outside might not be a great place for patty.also if you wanna train her a beagle will do anything for food!!!!

We are new to Beagles as well. Our two had been kept outside before we took them. They live inside with us but spend time in the garden especially now that they have two new lounger cushions to lay in the sun. (Spoilt?). They are such a loving breed and we get some much pleasure from the love they give cuddled up to us in the evenings. Personally, I could not keep them outside but maybe I am an old softee!

I am hoping that being tied in the garage is a very temporary safe place for her right now, as beagle need to be close to their owners and need to have that body contact and comfort. They are much like little children in that. It sounds as if you have found an exceptional little beagle and I hope she is allowed to have some space to roam, as being kept in one location for too long will make her "nutty" if it goes on for too long. Oh, I forgot to answer your original question! Yes, beagles can run away but it isn't out of being "bad", they are just always "on the sniff". They can get on a trail and sniff away for however long then finally look up and not know where they are at! It's how I ended up with my beagle, as her other owners never took her "beagleness" into account. I also lost her a few times, and thanks to God, I got her back. So yes, they need a safe place they can run and sniff and never, ever, let her off leash when you are going out to the woods or camping, hiking, anything like that. They are just made to find what they are looking for! LOL!
