Hello all Just wondering about your thoughts. I got bandit at 8 weeks old back in may . He just turned 1 year old. That whole time i was out of work and with him all the time like my wife says he is my side kick. Well this Monday i will be starting a new job (15th) of march. I left him alone for 4 hours at a time but not all day. He will be free to Rome in the kitchen I know about a radio, lots of toys, water , I feel so bad to leave him now . My question is how will he handle this ? He wants to be by my side all the time if i sit down he has to sit with me. When the wife comes home he will take to her also........I cant believe that i am so attached to a dog
... Thanks for any in put

He will be fine. Just leave kongs and toys that can keep him busy. I believe that dogs really have no concept of time, so of course, he will be happy to see you! But it's like kids, they have to learn eventually that they can't always be picked up!
I am sure everything will be fine!

I saw a Peanuts cartoon a while back that had Snoopy staing at the house with Lucy and Linus beacuse Charlie Brown was on vacation. Snoopy was saying that he had heard that dogs have no concept of time so he couldn't tell if the bald headed kid had been gone for 5 minutes or 5 years. Lucy walks by saying "Get out of my way you stupid beagle" Snoopy says (thinks) "5 years". Most dogs just go to sleep until you get back once they get used to it.

Sounds like you have some good ideas already. Maybe you can practice some alone time before you start your job. Start with an hour, etc. TV or radio helps too. One thing I found was that if you make your departure calm but fun, and your arrival quiet and uneventful, it makes a big difference. Molly and Andy are gated in my kitchen and when I leave I hand them Kong toys and just say "see ya in a bit".

If you are really concerned, enroll your Beagle in a local "dog daycare." I did it with my first two dogs - they went to daycare two times a week for many months, and then I weaned them down to once a week for a long time, and now they just stay home. If you can afford the daycare, I'd recommend 1 or 2 days a week just because the socialization is so important AND your dog will be completely worn out at the end of the day (very important for Date Night). I have friends who send their dogs to Friday daycare just so they can enjoy a night out without worrying about Fido!

Oh, I forgot something ... my girls LOVE when I rush in the door after work and pack them into the car and go to the dog park! They LOVE the dog park. If you can do it every day, you'll be set in gold! Now, our dog parks have a "small/old dog" section that I prefer, just to keep them safe from the large dogs that pack up. Also, go to "Meetups.com" and find or start a Beagle group in your area - it's a lot of fun.
