We didn't really have a problem with this. My schedule is terribly inconsistent and at first I feared the dogs would not adjust well. However, I leave safe toys with them and dont' make a big production when I leave and come home. They now know when I am getting ready to leave and go right into their room with no problem. I give them one treat each, leave the tv or radio on for them, and in a calm voice say "Ok be good, see ya later!" and close the door. Sometimes they bark for a minute or two but when they realize I am gone for the day they settle down.
I have found they adapt pretty well. Good luck to you!
