Default What changes about a beagle after neuter or spay?

I am thinking long and hard to go ahead and neuter/spay the puppy when he gets old enough.

But what are some of the things will it curb them from doing? What kind of attitude adjustment does it do for them??

Amber was spayed when she was about 9 months old and I didn't really notice a huge behavioral difference. She got fat, but I think that was because my uncle used to feed her half of his food all the time. She did calm down some, but I don't know how much of that was due to the spay and how much was just her growing up.

Jersey came from the rescue spayed.

The only difference I noticed with Spencer was that he stopped burning the grass. He was still crazy as ever and just as much a beagle as ever. Sydney really didn't change much either. I find you see the biggest difference once they turn 2 or 3. That's was when my two started to calm down a little. BTW, Spencer was neutered at 4.5 months and Sydney was spayed at 6 months. To me, it's not an option, it's a must.

so the only plus to doing this, is not dealing female heat session.

what about territory marking in male, does that reduce any?

I've never had a male but I've always heard that it makes them stop marking. Unless you are going to breed the pup there's really no reason not to have them fixed. It will keep any accidental pregnancies from happening too. What if the dog gets lose and meets another in tact male or female. Or one gets in your yard. Now there's another pregnant stray with puppies. There are other health reasons to do it too, especially with females. Like Spencer's Mum said, it's really a must. Everyone is much better off.

In my mind its not an option but a MUST. A male dog will stop running off looking for bitches on heat and usually stops marking. A female stops the obvious, coming on heat and brooding. I cant say there is a problem with character change. So please go ahead and have him neutered, you won't regret it.

Alrighty then!

I now know i will need to get him neutered.

For some reason i want a boy, maybe it is just me being a male, but oh well i think i made my mind up.

But oh the thought of losing the family jewels!

I called vet afew days ago and she was like you can reduce the cost, by not getting a IV bag or pain meds and such, i was like

If i lost my boys, i would want all of the dope in the world so i won't feel any pain! Then they would have to prescribe anti-depression pills! lol

I agree with Spencer's Mum, Jen & Angela, spaying and neutering is a MUST. The only way we'll ever get a handle on homeless pets is to be sure that more unplanned puppies aren't born.
