Default About training.....

I didn't want to continue to derail mmoore's thread. Whether kids or dogs, everyone has a right to raise, discipline, train, as they see fit. If positive only training works for you, awesome. Personally, I can't imagine never giving a correction. I don't see giving a correction as a bad thing. Do I give a correction to be mean? No. I want the child or dog to learn proper behavior - what is acceptable and what is not. I want to set them up to be successful. I set boundaries at home, so they know what is expected in public. If I have no control at home, I cannot be surprised, if I have none outside of the home.

Natty Boh is only part beagle. Pretty sure he is also part JRT. Not sure where the snark comes from, as I know beagles can be snarky too. Boh is very food motivated and is a very quick learner. I started his training with hand feeding and treats. After he learned, a command, trick, task - no more treats. He was a terrible resource guarder, which was unacceptable. I worked to desensitize him, but he needed to know that his behavior would not be tolerated. The first time I tried to trim Boh's nails, I sat on the floor with him and had him against my legs. I was wearing shorts. He kicked with his hind legs and dug the crap on my legs. I yelled at him. It was loud and it was mean. (Possibly a few expletives.) He has never, ever done that again. He sits and gets his nails trimmed like a pro. Boh seldom blows me off, when I call him. One cold day, we were outside. I said, "Let's go." Shelby came. Boh didn't. I walked onto the deck, shut the gate, went into the house and shut the door. Left Boh in the cold, alone for a few minutes. He has not blown me off since. I feel like sometimes, we just need to get their attention.

Here is a video of one of the all time great SchH GSDs. This is the controlled aggression. You can see the handler touch the dog, while he is amped up. The dog remains focused and does not redirect on the handler. Likewise, the dog engages the decoy, and outs when he is told or is corrected for it. Many of my friends train IPO with their German Shepherd Dogs. It's fun, they say. lol!

Well, to those of you who 'can' see the video.... I LOVE the end, when the dog jumps into his owners' arms. SIGH!
