Default Why is my puppy so nervous around my old dog's ashes?

One thing I've been noticing about my puppy of four months old is lately he sometimes stares at the shelf where my old dog's cremation urn and starts barking at it out of nowhere. The few times I moved my dead dog's ashes around the house, while I'm holding it my puppy looks filled with anxiety and starts barking specifically at the tin can he's in. At least once he tried to put his paw in it. He doesn't seem to like it.

Can anyone explain this? Is it normal for dogs?

Dogs have an amazing sense of smell as well as a sense of our feelings. The container the ashes are in probably has the scent of the vet's office. Plus when you are near the ashes you probably get a change in your mood momentarily. When my first beagle passed away, my other dog would just pick his head up and look around as if Benny had passed through the room.

When our first dog Lucy died I sent away some of the ashes and had them incorporated in a small glass ball. I think it cost $100. I have them sitting in front of our TV. My cello teacher let us scatter the rest of her ashes in her orchard. I like to imagine Lucy and Scout (my cello teachers' former dog) running and playing together in the fields.

I think Cheryl nailed it. That would be my best guess, as well.

techie, that is awesome. And - I did NOT know that you played the cello. Such a beautiful instrument.
